2025 Journalist of the Year Portfolio
Broadcast Journalism
Throughout my time the journalism department, I’ve dabbled in various aspects of broadcast journalism, each of which has expanded my understanding and skillset in unique ways. From producing a TV show to hosting a podcast and broadcasting basketball games, I’ve gained experience across multiple platforms. Each of these projects showcases the importance of diversity within broadcast journalism, demonstrating how different mediums can be used to connect with audiences in impactful ways.

Sit n Spill TV Show
I’m grateful for the opportunity to try new things at South, such as hosting a talk show with my friend, Savannah Poage ('26). We came up with the concept of a show that blends literal drinking tea with pop culture tea. Interviewing people around South Salem High School and spilling the "tea" about their lives. I've been able to step out of my comfort zone, which is usually being behind the camera to being in front of the camera.

Our show features a variety of fun segments, starting with "Today’s Recap," where we discuss pop culture headlines and events related to South Salem High School. We also have "Cookie Jar Confessions," where guests pull lighthearted questions from a cookie jar and answer them. Finally, we wrap up with "Savvy Segments," a silly and entertaining portion of the show designed to make our audience laugh. I am excited to see our show develop.

Due to the weather and cancelation of school we havent been able to publish the episode we filmed, but we are planning on creating 8 episodes from now up until the end of the school year.
The Ladies Room Podcast
The Ladies Room Podcast brings together three high school girls from different grades—sophomore, junior, and senior—as we navigate the highs and lows of life as teenage girls. The podcast's intent is to share our personal experiences, reflect on what it’s like growing up, and connect with listeners who can relate to each of our journeys. Similar to the Sit n Spill, we just started this podcast so while we are still trying to figure it all out, I am very excited to see where this podcast will go.

Similar to Sit n Spill, we've run into a few complications that have delayed the of the podcast. With the new semester, cancellation of school, and lack of resources to create outside of school, we haven't been able to release our first episode.

Broadcasting Basketball Games
Last year, for the South Salem Girls Basketball team’s senior night, Mele Letisi ('26) and I (Lily Squires '25) had the exciting opportunity to call the game live on Podbean. It was our first time calling a game, and it turned out to be a lot of fun! I handled the play-by-play, keeping up with the fast pace of the game and making sure our listeners were always informed, especially since there was no video coverage to accompany the broadcast. It was a great experience that gave me a taste of what live sports broadcasting is all about.
